Other solutions aimed at boosting efficiency in the energy sector include GE Powers new Digital Power Plant software for gas, steam and nuclear power stations. GE says the software helps to reduce unplanned downtime by up to five percent, decrease operations and maintenance costs by around 25 percent and cut false positive alerts by up to 75 percent. Then theres GE Renewable Energys Digital Hydro Plant, which is a suite of applications integrated with GE hardware for customers in the hydroelectric power industry. GE said the solution complements its Digital Wind Farm, Digital Power Plant for Gas and Digital Power Plant for Steam solutions, and should help companies in these industries to slash maintenance costs by up to 10 percent, increase plant availability by 1 percent, and revenues by up to 3 percent.

GEs product announcements closely follow theacquisition of two more IoT startups namely Wise.io, which specializes in predictive intelligence, and Bit Stew, which offers a data intelligence platform powered by machine learning that integrates data between industrial connected devices and external systems.

In just the past year, weve seen more than 30 international, state and private power producers and utilities begin their digital journeys with GE, said Ganesh Bell, chief digital officer at GE Power. Todays announcements represent another major step forward in the digitalization of the industry. I believe we will look back on 2016 as a tipping point when digital transformation went mainstream.

At the event, GE also predicted that its Predix platform would be used by 20,000 developers by the end of this year, as it continues to position itself as a provider of next-generation Industrial IoT infrastructure.

GEs new Predix systems and solutions for the Industrial IoT include GE Current, a new product designed for digital energy management which is able to analyze and optimize energy usage and efficiency in lighting, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and other systems. The solution is aimed at restaurants, retailers and other commercial businesses that wish to gain insights on how much energy is being used in real-time, GE said. Using the software, customers can perform historical, predictive and prescriptive analytics.
