At CES, IBM Chairman and CEO Ginni Rometty, and Kevin Plank, Founder and CEO, Under Armour, announced a new cognitive coaching system, powered by Watson, that will transform personal health and fitness. The system will serve as a personal health consultant, fitness trainer and assistant by providing athletes with coaching around sleep, fitness, activity and nutrition. It will initially be available within UA Record™ available now on the App Store. (Alan Rosenberg/Feature Photo Service for IBM)

Within two years, the Internet of Things (IoT) will be the single greatest source of data on the planet, generated by billions of interconnected sensors and devices embedded into the worlds physical systems. IBMs Watson technologies thrive on tremendous volumes of data, and the IoT provides that. Cognitive systems puts all types of data — even data that you may not be aware of — into context with systems that learn at scale, reason with purpose and interact with humans naturally.

IBM Chairman and CEO Ginni Rometty, and Medtronic CEO Omar Ishrak, unveil the latest advances in applying cognitive computing to diabetes management during CES 2016. The two companies showed a research prototype for a first-of-its-kind cognitive app designed to analyze real-time data from Medtronic devices to help detect important patterns and trends for people with diabetes. In a pilot, IBM and Medtronic applied cognitive analytics to 600 anonymous patient cases using data from Medtronic insulin pumps and glucose monitors. The technology was able to predict hypoglycemia low blood sugar up to three hours in advance of onsetearly enough so a person with diabetes could take action to prevent a potentially dangerous health event. The goal is to interpret the available data and act as a personal assistant. Contact: Christine Douglass, IBM, , (Alan Rosenberg/Feature Photo Service for IBM)
